The Latvian energy industry will try to use home-produced peat instead of imported oil. According to the plan up to 30% of the total energy demand which is now met by means of oil refining will soon be redirected to using peat.
Such is the plan announced by the Economy Ministry which is responsible for the strategy of the energy industry development in the country. The planned period for this transition — till 2030. As a subsidiary means to peat there is a plan to use the oil and gas which will be possible to discover in the territory of the country. Therefore the amount of the imported energy resources will be reduced twice by 2030.
“By the indicated period half of the energy in Latvia will be produced from the renewable sources. The most time taking in respect of “requalification” is the transport sector. Using its own resources Latvia can manufacture bio fuel of the second or even third generation. Wood and other renewable resources are suitable for this purpose. Latvia intends to build its own plant producing biofuel from wood”,- Juris Puce, the State Secretary of the Energy Ministry says.
At the same time Latvia is not going to phase out nuclear power plants.
