Russia is ready to consider the possibility of exporting electric power to Germany from the new generation nuclear power plant — the Baltic atomic power station, which is now being constructed in the Kaliningrad region. This was announced by the Deputy Director General of the State Corporation Rosatom Kirill Komarov in his interview to the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
“We have our won needs in the Kaliningrad region but naturally we also look at the Baltic countries, Poland and Germany”. – says Komarov. According to the Rosatom representative the construction of the first unit of the Baltic nuclear power plant will be finished by 2016, the second one is to be completed two years later.
To recap, on June 30 the lower house of Parliament of Germany approved of the country’s exit from nuclear energy, suggested by the Chancellor Angela Merkel after the Fukushima disaster.
Komarov also pointed out that many countries which are using nuclear energy can afford to phase it out. “In Ukraine nuclear energy costs two American cents a kilowatt, while coal plant energy is six cents, and that of renewable energy – 11 cents,” – the Deputy Director General of Rosatom emphasized. – “”If Ukraine were to close down its nuclear plants that would mean the end of Ukrainian economy”
German manufacturers as well as the representatives of the neighboring countries fear that Germany’s exit from nuclear energy may raise the electricity prices and put at risk the energy supply of one of the largest European economies. As Komarov points out ‘Germany has the right for such a decision but it will result in electricity getting more expensive’.
