The inappropriate operation of Cheboksary Hydroelectric Power Plant threatens underflooding in the Volga region – the operation of the power plant above the designed mark of the dam lake may cause flooding of all the objects down the river. The village of Kokshaisk (the Republic of Marii El) is in a particularly dangerous situation: it is located below the hydroelectric complex. The government of the Republic of Marii El has appealed to RusHydro, which is the owner of Cheboksary HPP with the demand of taking urgent measures with the aim of avoiding the flooding of Kokshaisk. The most efficient step would be raising the mark of Cheboksary dam lake to reach the designed 68 meters.
Novostienergetiki.ru poin out that this year Volga is experiencing a very fast, the so-called ‘peak’ flood, with the storage capacity of the dam lake, which was operated with violation to the norms creating a serious danger. It should be reminded that Cheboksary Hydro power plant has been operated with the dam lake mark of 3 meters instead of the designed 68m.
