Environmentalists, big NGOs as well as opposition political forces in Kaliningrad created a coalition actively standing for the organization of a referendum on the issue of another nuclear power plant construction in the region.
The initiators of the referendum are appealing to the authorities with the issues which the common citizens of the region concerned with — safety, fertilizers and oncology, renewable energy development, electricity sales, prices and tariffs, raw material dependence, taxes, reactor cooling and many others.
The volunteers of anti-nuclear power plant movement are puzzled by the fact that the citizens and NGOs of Lithuania are not concerned with the construction of the plant. After all in the case of an accident situation at the power plant most of the territory of this country will become an evacuation zone. The referendum advocates make no secret of the fact that the Russian authorities tried to suppress their initiative by severe administrative measures but they still managed to register a citizens’ action group on referendum organization and at present the volunteers have started the signatures collection.
