A tripartite Memorandum of Intent was signed by Alcoa, RUSNANO and JSC Inter-regional distribution grid companies Holding (JSC IDGC Holding) on June 17, within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2011. This document stated both parties’ intention to create a joint enterprise with the aim of developing and manufacturing nanocoatings.
According to the press-center of RUSNANO, the partners are planning to produce anti-icing nano-structured coatings for ground cables, wires and other components of power transmission lines. There are also plans to manufacture next generation wires and cables with improved conductivity and anti-icing properties for JSC Holding IDGC companies
The joint venture of Alcoa and RUSNANO will install a pilot production line for nanocoating application. JSC Holding IDGC will provide maintainance for research and development as well as test and certification of new high-tech products.
«We all know very well that icing of power transmission lines due to unfavorable weather conditions and their subsequent rupture are one of the most acute problems that Russia power engineers are facing. We expect that our cooperation in development nanocoatings for the lines already in operation, and in perspective – the production of next generation cables – will allow us to solve this problem«, — said RUSNANO Chief Executive Officer Anatoly Chubais.
JSC Holding IDGC Director General Nickolay Shvets in his turn noted that last winter with its abnormal natural disasters including ‘icy rains’ was quite enough to fully realize the need for wires with improved anti-iced properties. Their implementation will allow to reduce the probability of rupture as well as to increase service life of power transmission lines.
