“Ukraine would like more clarity on the part of Russia and the European Union concerning the perspectives of using its gas transportation system”, — the Ukrainian media agencies quote the press-secretary of the Ukrainian prime-minister Vitaliy Lukyanenko saying.
The Ukrainian party is concerned with Russia building a bypass pipeline beyond the boundaries of Ukraine. In case Russia stops its gas transit through the territory of its western neighboring country the maintenance of the Ukrainian gas transportation system will become economically irrational and it will have to be closed down.
At the same time according to the press-secretary of the prime-minister of Ukraine the shutdown of the gas transportation system is a serious risk factor for Europe. “The routes of gas deliveries by-passing Ukraine are by sea and they are subject to risks which have not been studied so far”, — Vitaliy Lukyanenko explained. He also emphasized that due to its underground storages the gas transportation system can provide stable and guaranteed gas deliveries to Western Europe during a long period of time under any circumstances.
As the president of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev emphasized the statements of the Ukrainian party that their state pays for gas more than any other country are groundless. The president stressed the fact that the tariffs are equal for everybody and expressed the hope that ‘Ukrainian consumers will abide by the terms of the agreement accurately and our future business, our future cooperation parameters we will agree upon’.
