Ethnological Expert Evaluation Blocks Oil Pipeline

The construction project of the oil pipeline system Yamal will be a subject to an ethnological expert evaluation. The residents of the Tazovsky village fear that the project execution may violate the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North.

The expert evaluation with the participation of the Association “Yamal – For the Posterity!” should answer the question whether the oil-pipe construction is going to influence the traditional way of life of the indigenous people. The Vice Governor of the Yamal-Nenets autonomous district Vladimir Vladimirov who came to Tazovsky to hear the people’s complaints, said: “We need to work out approaches which would suit both the people who live on this land and those who harness natural resources here”. This was reported by the press-service of the Governor,

The length of Yamala system is over 600 kilometers, 150 of which are to lie via the territory of the Tazovsky district. Back in 2009 there were public consultations here, as a result of which the projects was approved of, but piping through the river Taz was considered unwanted. The plan of pipe laying was improved with dues consideration to the opinion of the local people, however it did not fully take into account the wishes of the citizens of the district.
