The Kolskaya drilling platform which sank in the Sea of Okhotsk on Sunday was technically sound: it has recently had a complete overhaul and obtained all the necessary permits for towing. This was declared today by the Director General of OJSC Arktikmor neftegaz razvedka (the owner of the drilling platform) Yuriy Melekhov.
“ SEFDR Kolskaya has had a complete overhaul this year – it was executed under the supervision of the two classification societies — det norske veritas – the Norwegian and the Russian maritime registrars, which have the highest requirements for drilling platforms navigation safety. The overhaul was completed in February, all the necessary permits obtained”, — he said.
According to Melekhov, all the passages of the platform – to Magadan, to the drilling sites and back – were carried out in accordance with the applicable documents which are in use in the navigation for exploitation of this type of platforms: the project of towing approved of by the registrar, guidelines, regulations were developed, all the necessary training was carried out.
The Director General emphasized that the staff which was engaged at the platform consisted of highly qualified and experienced specialists.
According to the information from him, the representative of the insurance company also gave the permission for towing.
It is worth reminding here that the Kolskaya drilling platform upset and sank in the course of towing in the Sea of Okhotsk. According to preliminary data it had 67 people on board, out of which only 14 has been rescued so far, 16 bodies have been found, the rest of the staff are considered to be missing.
