“The government of Ukraine is at present considering the possibility of repudiating a gas agreement with Russia of January 2009 in a judicial procedure”, — the prime-minister of the country Mykola Azarov says. The head of the Ukrainian government made this statement today, on August 5 in the court where he was questioned as a witness in the “gas” trial in relation to the ex-prime minister of Ukraine, Yulia Timoshenko, UA Regnum reports.
“We can certainly appeal to court. But as practice shows this will lead to a year-long trial. And there are no violations of the agreement terms on the Russian part…The government is studying the possibility — among others – of rupturing the agreement with the Russian Federation through the courts, however no decision on this issue has been made yet”, Azarov pointed out. At the same time the Ukrainian prime-minister admits that the terms of the agreement “make one-sided withdrawal from it practically impossible”. On the whole he characterized the gas price agreements with Russia signed by Timoshenko in 2009 as ‘treacherous towards both the people and the country’.
