Uzbekistan stopped all deliveries of natural gas to Tajikistan without any warning, the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports. In this connection the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a letter from the head of Tajikistan Emomalii Rahmon.
A month and a half ago Uztransgaz raised the price on gas exported to Tajikistan. Gas price went up by 26 dollars – to 311 dollars per one thousand cubic meters. Besides, last year Uzbekistan underdelivered its neighbor 20 million cubic meters of gas (the planned volume was 180 million cubic meters). The natural gas imported from Uzbekistan is mainly used by the Tajik Aluminium Company.
The Tajik party made several attempts last year to sign the contract on gas deliveries for 2012. However each time the Uzbek party postponed the request of their Tajik colleagues. The first Vice Prime-minister of Uzbekistan Rustam Azimov explained that the issue of deliveries and sales of the Uzbek gas to its major consumers (i.e. Russia and China) is still undecided, and therefore “signing the contract with Tajikistan does not seem to be possible”.
