Construction of First Phase of Rogun Hydro Power Plant in Tajikistan Brought into Challenge

The experts of the World Bank completed the first cycle of the appraisals on the final stage of the complex construction of the Rogun hydro power plant in Tadjikistan.

According to the World Bank’s Country Director for Central Asia Motoo Konishi the appraisal of the expert team is negative and the government of Tajikistan received a recommendation to refrain from constructing the first phase of a hydro power plant dam in Rogun (the projected height of the dam is 120 meters).

The Board of Directors of the World Bank supported the recommendation of the expert team. The experts explain a huge risk at the dam construction by the presence of a considerable amount of sedimentary rocks and materials which come with the waters of the river Vaksh. However the independent Tadjik experts in the field of power engineering believe that the sedimentaries do not constitute a real threat for the future giant dam of the Rogun hydro power plant. The World Bank representatives agreed with the opinion of Tadjik experts and consider that it is necessary to do a detailed check-up of the project calculations. The dam of the future Rogun hydro power plant will be a subject to the overall technical, economic, environmental and social governmental evaluation. According to the tentative forecast this will take from half a year to 8 months.
